Sugar Tax: Local Industries Bitter

At the Business Forum ni Karancho held at the Stone House  Bed & Breakfast in Quezon City last May 24, Federation of Philippine Industries (FPI) chairman Jess Arranza explained that the House-concocted tax mega hike on sugar and even artificial sweeteners, will not only prove bitter for consumers  but on local industries as well. He explained that this is likely to cause a sharp drop in demand for sugar—which in turn will hurt the local sugar industry. Arranza added that government’s tax collection targets can be achieved without forcing the public to reach even deeper into their pockets, by simply plugging tax loopholes and curbing corruption in revenue-collecting agencies.    --- Mister
